A plate gate valve is a sliding valve with a parallel gate as the closing member. The closing member may be a single gate or a double gate with a supporting mechanism in between. The pressure of the gate against the seat is controlled by the medium pressure applied to the floating gate or the floating seat. In the case of a double gate plate gate valve, this compression force is supplemented by a support mechanism between the two gates.
